I debugged the first Ascend ethernet driver in May 1993 (IPO was May, 1994). I think the first general software release with the bridging routing software was 4.0 which I cut in February of 94. This was beta quality code. Lots of bugs found and fixed and in April of 94, just before IPO, I cut version 4.2. I think PSI went live with 4.2 (and UUNET testing started testing around that time.)

Marc,

Cool. It's fun to look back at those early days. I remember, when I was a EE, building and debugging glitches in a computer IBM was building for a Navy anti-submarine project. We were using SSI chips (4 gates on a chip, perhaps a few more, but less than 10!) Then they had me teaching fellow IBMers how something called an Intel 8080 functioned (and how to program it) (why didn't I buy INTC back then).

Anyway, Marc, are you still with ASND or, as I guess is the case, have you gone on to greener pastures?

Gary Korn

To be honest, Frank Quattrone, CEO of Deutsche Morgan Grenfell Technology Group, was the one who wrote the majority of this piece off the top of his head, from his direct experience with ASND and its IPO.

I felt it was relative after I got it from Frank and passed it to Gary via E-mail. I posted it on Yahoo on January 26, and Gary posted over here on January 30.

I sorta figured since Frank was there, he probably knew the story better than me.
