U.S. Leads Millennium Awareness, Survey Says techweb.com U.S. Leads Millennium Awareness, Survey Says (12/04/97; 4:51 p.m. EST) By Andrew Craig, TechWeb <Picture>LONDON -- Roughly 71 percent of IT managers in the United States said their senior managers fully understand the millennium issue, making U.S. senior managers the most millennium-aware in the world, according to a worldwide survey. But many IT managers outside the United States worry that their senior executives are still not fully aware of the implications of the year 2000 problem, with the problem worst in continental Europe, according to the survey published Wednesday by London-based technology consultancy PA Consulting. Scandinavia comes second to the United States in terms of awareness of the year 2000 problem.. <snip> But continental Europe -- excluding the United Kingdom and Ireland -- takes the booby prize, according to PA Consulting, with just 49 percent of IT managers reporting a full understanding of the year 200 issue among their senior executives. <snip> 'PA Consulting said in the report that "severe disruption" is likely to occur within organizations that do not prepare their computer systems for the date change from 1999 to 2000. The report concluded that "the costs of the program are substantial," and said that "organizations starting late will probably struggle to find the quality of resource required for their programs."The findings appear to add weight to a statement by Gartner Group analysts last month, who said more than 40 percent of European public-sector systems will be unprepared for the change.'
