Re -- cpq is putting together their act for the next millinium and that will power stk to 900 from 30.

Right. But who knows what will happen with SUN/HP/IBM innovating, while CPQ is integrating... in the next 2 years.

For all you know this might be the case of the ATT/NCR.. They were also putting together their act at that time.

For DEC's employee, I am sorry to say the managers has not done a good job in the past.
Efficiency is the main factor for success. You have to work efficiently and smartly, but
not necessary dilligently. DEC should be a high pay company with efficiency, employee should be rewarded for their smart and efficient working. So, maybe lay off 40%, and for the rest of 60% , give 10 to 20% raise immediately according o their efficiency , and achievements. Company with high pay but efficiency , has more chance to be successful than companies with low pay but redundance.The morality is different !!!!
