The basic concept of encrypting currencies was introduced by BIS long ago in their swift system that any bank around the world has access to it if he is a member of BIS

The basic different is that they transact real paper money denominated currency (strictly controlled by issuing governments) via SWIFT and not some imaginary crypto currency - the issue of popularity is the same as TESLA or GOOGLE
