CO, Price, Last QTR EPS w/ charge, Last QTR PE w/o charge, PE w/ charge, and PE w/o charge QNTM 24.5, (.24), .29, 13.2, 10.2 SEG 23.25, (.75), (.08), NA, 155 WDC 19.00, (1.66), .03, 22.89, 7.5 RDRT 25.12, (1.88), .02, NA, 17.8 HTCH 25.12, -- , (.58), --, 25.6 INVX 21.87, --, .50, --, 9.2 The above prices are rounded off and are priced as of 01/30/98. Charge is one time charges the various companys took. I think only HTCH and INVX did not take one time charges. This will be of interest if you only compare PEs. I know there are a lot of other variables when looking at a company or industry, but this may give you an idea on which are the strongest companys when comparing price and earnings. Just looking at the last 2-3 qtrs, it appears as there has been a definite downward trend (in some cases very extreme) in revenue in all of the companies above. Based on the limited info above it appears as though QNTM and INVX are by far the strongest (price wise). Only INVX has made money in the last qtr. Thank god for their high margins. WDC seems to be the worst of the above 6 companys in terms of PEs. From the CCs and info I have received on different sites it appears as though the qtr ending Mar will be similar or lightly downwards from this qtr (Not taking into account any other one-time charges). All of the various hdd companies seem to hint that after Mar and later this year things will pick up. I believe RDRT and SEG both stated their inventory numbers had been reduced since the fall of 97. Now may be the time to load up on the strongest of the hdd makers and component makers. Get in before the institutions figure out what is going on.
