I am not convinced it is short covering. In the stock market in order to short a stock you must borrow the stock from someone who owns in. When you own a stock at a brokerage it is held in street name which allows the brokerage to lend your stock to someone who wants to short it. If you take possession of the stock certificate no one can short your shares.

The only way to short BTC is to borrow it first, but if no one is loaning it, there is no BTC to short.

This rally is an absence of sellers. Too many BTC owners are HODLers.

If no one wants to sell the price goes to infinity.
