I'm planning on being an informal advisor for my kids - I don't aim beat Buy and Hold but rather to reduce beta - provide capital preservation and detect times where the cost benefit ratio of "being in" is not as favorable - struggling to recover from a 70% loss would put a lot of young people off. Missing an additional 10% growth during fluctuating markets won't keep them awake. It seems (logically) that the volatility increased with the introduction of computer trading. Many of the highest returning funds I looked at had its best and worst year this year!! Hokey smokes!!
