Interestingly....

the term "point blank" is always correct in its usage when describing the distance of a weapon being fired to target at measured close range distances.

The entire concept of point blank is a bit more complex.

Point blank range differs between weapons and ammunition as it is a distance a given bullet can travel to hit its intended target without adjusting the weapons sights.

For example point blank range for a .223/5.56, 243, 25-06 and likely up to .308 might be in excess of 300 yards.

The idea is that if my rifle is sighted for impact at 100 yards it will shoot a bit low at 25 yards. But maybe only and inch or so. That same rifle bullet will impact perhaps 3 inches low at 200 yards and upwards of 1.5 feet low at 300 yards. Yet, the torso of a human is roughly 3 feet from head to hips and that would be considered a kill shot. So, since no further adjustments would be made to the rifle in this example, point blank would be 300 yards.

I rounded numbers and "probly'd" the calibers for information purposes. Trajectory tables for given calibers and bullets can be found all over the net.

Regarding handgun "point blank" the distances are far shorter as you would expect but even a 9mm might have a point blank range in excess of 100 yards.
