here is an offthewall comment re: Israel..wonder if again it would be self interest for USA because I would guess that if Iraq did anything to Israel, Israel would retaliate with a greater force.. nuclear for instance, and that would be another "big bang"..so in a sense USA is possibly thinking of protecting itself from another oil shock not for sake of Israel..but itself..(also enough antisemitism around that it is unlikely that US government would act on behalf of Israel for Israel's sake-at least I think we would all agree that Clinton is driven by political ambition and not necessarily by conscience) heard rumors during last war that US told Israel to "lay off" and told S.H. if he tried anything "big" he would pay hugely..heard Peter Arnett speak after war and Arnett said he was no hero and from his sources, there wouldn't be conflagration(sp?)..he is there again. Sounds like government doesn't think they will be able to get S.H. so why bother? Since this has been going on before the scandal broke out, don't put much faith in that this is a political diversion..also the month of Ramadam had started before the scandal and it would have been devastating for US if they had done something during the high holy days in world opinion.. I don't know what influence Russia has although it seems to be siding more with Iraq..last time I heard their army hadn't been paid for a while.. Secretary Cohen said that US had allied support.. Interesting times
