Ali,

It could delay design if all of a sudden AMD decided to scap there slot A Alpha bus design and go another route. Maybe they will talk to Intel about licensing slot 1&2d or stick to socket 7. Who knows what they may do if they decided to but if they change plans now certianlly they will have to change design work already acomplished.

Robert

<There is no reason for Compaq to weaken his position by killing the technically superior technology and unleash Intel in the server market. IMHO. >

Ali, Merced is going to happen anyway. Would it make sense to keep an unsuccessful archeticture alive on life support if the only place it can be manufactured is it its competitors fab? I don't think so. How about the idea of Compaq buying AMD and going head to head against Intel with Alpha & K7? Would it make sense to do this relying on AMD's process expertize? I don't think so.

Merced is happening whether of not Alpha is around. Digital got a look at Merced and decided it was time to dump Alpha. Compaq wants on the Merced train just like everybody else. Merced is a new generation of technology. Alpha cannot compete in the marketplace and it's obvious to everybody but you.
