Fortunately I lived across the border but spent a lot of time in the north with friends and family. You learned to be very tight lipped and very aware of your surroundings. Moving to the US was so refreshing - being able to express opinions/views without fear of reprisal. The funny thing is Northern Irish Catholics and Protestants get along famously when out of that environment - here in the US we can can sit down together and discuss politics etc. Of course today it's nowhere near as bad as back in the 70s/80s thank goodness. Clinton's envoy George Mitchell was instrumental in bringing about the peace accord......I never believed it could have been done but he did it.
