All establishments, given enough time, become corrupt oligarchies. They learn how to convert political power and influence into cash. That attracts unprincipled people. That was Trump’s problem all along - his appointees were seeking another stepping stone on their career path - not service.

The other aspect - is that we have primaries and in red districts the commies play games.
I live in MA with open primaries. In primaries, I almost always take the D ballot and vote for the weakest candidate who has a chance. I voted Bernie twice. Of course some of them do the same.
