"I'm sorry I'm taking this too far." Someone pointed out a few months ago that is a common tactic used by people with dementia to get out of embarrassing moments. They can sense they aren't making sense because they can still read people's faces so turn it into a joke - Ohh you know old Joe, I do love to go on too long". Once I learned that I see him doing it all the time.
