Time Magazine has an interesting article about the flu in its 23 February 1998 edition: The Flu Hunters.

If Relenza proves to be an effective flu treatment, who wouldn't rush to their doctor for a flu test if an outbreak of the "bird flu" occurred? And I'd venture to guess HMOs and the government would promote testing and treatment, since it would certainly be more cost effective than paying the medical expenses for the thousands who would be hospitalized if they didn't get Relenza.

Relenza's not approved yet, but it sure looks like it'll be a winner:
