It is an existential threat to the Republicans. Say Trump manages to peel of 10%. He probably could do better than that, but say 10%. That would be a fatal blow that no amount of gerrymandering and voter suppression could paper over. They have just about maxed what those can do as it is. Given the fact that if Trump hadn't of attracted a lot of voter who usually don't vote, the usual methods are probably past their use by dates and they need some new stuff. Take off another 10% or more and they are dead.
