Steve,

I am from Northern California not San Diego. However, I will say the best one out there should be QCOM's QCP-2700 Dual-band Dual-Mode PCS phone. Sony also has a similar offering. Well. I am a QCOM fan with a bias. Of course.

The reasons are economical, all inclusive functions (analog and PCS, Caller ID, Pager (no need to have a separate pager any more)), voice mail, exclusive form QCOM's QPE. It functions as a PCS phone in PCS coverage area and as an analog phone in non-PCS area. No other service provider provide such phone yet. Period. Even, Pacific Bell's PCS (Ericy and Nokia' phone). (Anybody corrects me?) This QCP-2700 is provided by Sprint PCS. Go with it with a very good minutes plan.
Other PCS phone are all PCS phone only (no analog). Even better if you can buy the mighty "Q phone", though PCS only.

AirTough (Powerband service only, the rests are strictly analog) and GTE wireless also provide CDMA phones in San Diego. They are Digital celluar (not PCS) and analog (800 mkz and analog). They offered Nokia CDMA phone, QCOM QCP-820 and QCP 800 phone, Samsung CDMA phone, Sony CDMA phone too.

Check the following site for more information:
gte.com (GTE)
sprintpcs.com (Sprint PCS)
airtouch.com (Airtouch)

Keep cool with QCOM

Good luck for your selection
