''30 million adults are using the net to locate product information on products as diverse as travel, software, investing, and automobiles,'' said Peter Clemente, vice president of Cyber Dialogue. ''In 1997, 11 million adults completed their information retrieval by making an online purchase and most significantly, one in five of these individuals said they shop less in retail stores as a result of shopping online.'' The news is not all bad for retail; 36% of product information retrievers reported that they eventually went to a local store to buy the product, but the trend is for users to start their product search on the Internet. ''Web merchants stepped up their level of merchandising last year, and online shoppers responded positively. Users love the fact that they are in charge of the shopping experience and can find very specific comparison shopping information any time they want without being pressured by sales personnel,'' Clemente observed. Additional data points of interest include: -- 14% of Internet shoppers also say they shop less via mail-order catalogs -- The higher the household income, the more likely the individual is to retrieve product information or purchase online -- 95% of Internet shoppers said they were satisfied with their online shopping experience The American Internet User Survey is a comprehensive overview of Internet users and potential users.
