Steve, I guess I should have explained myself better. When trying to decide if Dell should buy out another company I am trying to understand the Compaq/DEC deal.

I am strickly talking from a financial perspective. In terms of damages to Compaq's financial balance sheet there had to be a cost either in terms of increased shares thus reducing earnings per share or in terms of cash not earning interest.

DEC didn't just hand over the company so I am assuming there was a price paid for the merger and it was paid by Compaq.
