Just recently re-read The Alchemist...

Coelho uses words like Nabakov, to magically evoke mental imagery in the reader... but Nabakov lives in small spaces with lots of simplicity being converted into complexity... while Coelho lives in the whole world at once, sees all the complexity, and how it diverts us from the paths we follow, and then makes it all seem simple without losing anything of it...

Rethinking mine last...

There's a continuum... Nabokov on one end... Coelho on the other...

And in the middle is Steinbeck: Nabokov trying to be Coelho.
