Jack, don't pick up too much on the English of the young generation, I have a fifteen year old who whould shame a good 80% of all posters on SI (your humble servitor, included), my 19 year old ain't to shabby either. Their English, I wish I knew 25% of wehat they do, and wrote at the 10% percentile of what they casually write. Those youngsters are a ray of hope. My son would never let me respond "it is me at the door", if I were, I would be accused of being "linguistic rapist" (VBG).

Jack and Sowbug,

Another classic ad using poor grammar was from none other than the venerable Ma Bell. It was, "Who shall I call first . . ." I'm sure there are others. I'll try to think of some more.

Also, I'm very encourage that a person of your age has such excellent English and grammar skills. I had just about given up on those educated after 1960.

Thanks, Jack. I'm a product of good public schools, with the exception of my college (good but private), and my mom's a teacher. She whupped us good when we said things like "raise up" (Redundant! Go to your room!).

Don't decide not to give up just yet. Many of my friends are among the worst grammar offenders I know. But at least I've learned to shut up about it.

The New Republic, The American Spectator, The Nation, Harpers, Atlantic, National Review

I don't know whether that's just a subset of your reading tastes, but you might also want to try Wired. Not quite as well-edited as The New Republic (the only mag among the ones you've listed that I read), but they sometimes push the envelope literarily in ways that I don't find grating.
