CPR, Of course, the purpose of this odd impeachment trial is not to convict - it's out of reach. The goal for Democrats is purely political - to show real face of Republicans who were ready to end democracy in this country by promoting a coup to overthrow legal elections. If there is some real damning piece of evidence that comes out during the trial, there is a chance that some other Republican Senators will change their minds. The question is how damning does the evidence need to be and how many might be willing to change their minds? With the potential for more retirements on the Republican side of the aisle, some more may be willing to put country in front of re-election.
