My Dad was in the work camp part of Auschwitz. He talked about the end of it all only once or twice that I know of. He said he was placed on a train and then forced off the train and then into one of the marches. One of the things about all of this that gave him some joy was that one night, they got off the train and slept in one of the close by buildings but were forced out because the German officers wanted the nicer building they were in. Overnight, the nicer building was bombed and many of the officers died. He said while they were on the march, the German soldiers just disappeared overnight and they were free and that they were met by the Americans. He survived with his younger brother who may have been in the Mengele part of the camp for at least part of his time there.
