GUNSNGOLD,

By removing shares that can be pledged you are removing inventory from the HF that they can use to cover their "shorts".
You must have a margin account to leverage purchases (borrow money to purchase more stock) or sell short (borrow shares to sell).

When you have a margin account, brokerages can only borrow your shares to be sold as a short sale. They cannot borrow your shares for purchase by someone covering a short sell.
