Deriding nuance
or
Simplifying

The exchange I was following was one that derided young people for not understanding.
The issue is nuanced, if you end up with three 16" pieces you missed it.
The young man using the tape measure would have gotten a correct result.
Carpenters generally work down to 32nds of an inch.
You can feel a 32nd of an inch quite easily with your fingers.

Dissing the young people for not making correct change or not knowing may be warranted.
But those doing it should understand that dividing by 2 is the same as multiplying by five.
I am surprised you are surprised.
The kerf is part of every cabinetmakers calculations and needs to be included on every cut.
The young man with the tape measure was doing it right, despite the disrespect.
