I used to use Peapod for groceries on occasion, but they pulled out of the Chicago area. I will occasionally buy groceries through Amazon Fresh and have been a frequent user of Instacart.

The on-demand delivery companies have been one of the beneficiaries of the pandemic. Unfortunately, the economic viability of this business model remains questionable, at least in its current form. The "gig" workers are underpaid, the restaurants and grocery stores absorb delivery fees that cut into or erase their profit margins and the delivery companies themselves are either losing money, or at the best breakeven.

The on-demand services are not going away once the pandemic ends. Habits have been changed. The pandemic is accelerating what would have been a gradual transformation of the way we acquire goods and services. Eventually, these costs need to be passed on to the consumer. A tough sell, but necessary.
