For individuals, it makes the most sense to have the bulk of their savings in a broad mutual fund, like SP500. If you back test a total return fund, like VFINX, using as a signal crossovers of long term moving averages, like monthly 6 and 18 — since 1985, you would beat buy and hold by about 1% a year. It would make you do 2 trades - in 2001 and 2008.

Pros cannot do this - can’t charge 1% for making 2 round trip trades in 35 years. But we can.
