Shandong to Boost Spending on Telecom Sector in 1998
February 3, 1998 (JINAN, China) -- Shandong province in eastern China will spend RMB8.5
billion (US$1.02 billion) on telecommunications projects in 1998, mainly to increase telephone
lines, the provincial post and telecommunications bureau said.

By the end of 1998, the province plans to have 8 million program- controlled switchboard lines, 57
million telephone customers and 2.6 million pager users.

In 1997, Shandong province's telephone switching capacity was 6.34 million lines.

The province will build a synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) transmission system and expand its
GSM network.

Its multimedia and Internet networks also will be expanded during the year. Priority will be given
to telecom development in rural areas, where a million program-controlled switchboard lines will
be added this year.

In 1997, the province's telecom industry recorded a business volume of RMB9.6 billion, and a total
of RMB6.5 billion was budgeted for fixed-asset investment in the sector.

Shandong plans to operate a telephone switching capacity of 12 million lines by the end of 1999,
which will result in a ratio of 12 phones per 100 people.
