I spent a few months exploring the waterways and forests of northern Australia. One of the things that comes across as strange is that there is no water in a lushes forest. There are stories of early settlers getting lost in the jungle and dying of thirst. It turns out that because of the shallow topsoil, there are very few watering holes. You can however cut any number of tubular plants and drink fresh water out of them. The aborigine never understood why the white men were too dumb to use the plants.

Context is everything when it comes to understanding meaning.
