When I stayed at a guess house In Bandung Indonesia, every night somebody would bang the iron gate in front of the house, it was kind of irritating so I asked the owner of the house why someone kept doing that, she told me that was the neighbourhood watch just letting her know the House was safe for the night.

I think many people from wealthier nations expect hired security guards to be dressed up like a Latin American dictator rather than being dressed in street clothes.
