There is also a math part.

If I buy a stock at $10, then the stock drops to $5. I lost 50%.
If I want to go from $5 back to $10, that will be 100%.

Losses are limited to 100%, gains have no limits. That's what makes the whole difference imho. I'll take 4 of the former (which almost never happens even at the worst of times) and one of the latter (which happens more often than we might think) any day of the week. Easy to say during a bull market though, which eventually does return :)
