The "Join the Crew" virus is a hoax... For more info on this and other virus hoaxes, see sophos.com Info on "Join the Crew": Name: Join the Crew Type: Hoax email virus Danger: None Description: This is another hoax email virus in the vein of the infamous Good Times hoax. It may have the subject 'Join the Crew' and contain the text WARNING!!!!!! If you receive an e-mail titled "JOIN THE CREW" DO NOT open it! It will erase EVERYTHING on your hard drive! Send this letter out to as many people you can. This particular hoax email virus was seen as early as January 1997, although it has only recently become quite widespread. It is important to note that it is impossible for a virus to exist in the normal text portion of an email. A virus could be carried within a file attached to an email, but this could only be spread by detaching the file and executing it or (if it contains macros) opening it with an application that could execute the viral macros. Therefore, with current email technology, it is impossible to become infected with a virus simply by reading an email.
