Your post reminded me of something that my high school Latin teacher, who was the best teacher I ever had, listed as one of her pet peeves (along with the expression "cream of the crop", which she found a mixed metaphor, and "each and every", which she thought redundant). She hated the word "kids" when referring to children. Over the years, it's grown more and more common and acceptable; I wonder if she's still alive and if it still bothers her.
....
Just looked it up and see that my infamous AHD has that particular usage listed as "informal", which she might find some consolation.
