I would google the user manual for your modem/router, then do a factory reset. And proceed to setup from scratch.

There is no reason you shouldn't be able to hookup 250 computers with the router handing out DHCP addresses, if you had enough switches...

I would personally find out which modems are compatible with your service provider then purchase a modem. Then buy an ASUS router. They are frequently on sale for $50 for the lower end models. They have the best user options on home routers.

Both the modem/router and the network switch are Netgear
How many ethernet ports on the modem/router? Just one? And what partnumber is the switch?
