Bill,
A president's actions while president are not exempt from the criminal justice system after he leaves office, as you erroneously seem to believe.
This isn't the criminal justice system. This is impeachment, and removal from office isn't the only consequence of conviction by the Senate.

Otherwise, if removal were the only recourse, you might have a point about the Senate wasting their time, other than to put another asterisk on top of all the other asterisks on Trump's legacy.

Then again, call me superficial, but I think it's worth adding the mother of all asterisks here. Trump's actions post-election were just plain stupid.
