The way I understand shorting stocks with dividends is the day after they go ex-div, the stock price is automatically decreased by the amount of the dividend. If you have borrowed shares, you are responsible for paying the dividend to whomever you borrowed them from.

As for the timber company, have you read the 10K? I don't know what the liquidation value of the company is, but I would not consider them as either a short or a long. Maybe a couple years ago it would have been a worth-while long.
