Over 350 exhibitors presented new products and applications to industry professionals at the COMNET trade show in Washington, DC this week. We had the opportunity to meet with management from data networking and wireline equipment companies, as well as with other industry sources at this trade show. Highlights from these meetings are as follows: Data Networking Highlights: * Cabletron. Over the next five years we estimate that indirect channels, international markets and carriers will become more important to Cabletron's revenue mix. Also, Cabletron wants to change their image from a "hot box" company to a vendor that delivers solutions. * Cisco's Gigabit Switch Router (GSR) 12000 has been successfully deployed at Sprint, UUNet, MCI, MediaOne and GTE (BBN). * Fore Systems. We expect Fore will announce an OEM relationship with ODS networks to sell their Infinite Switch product line. In recent months, Fore has signed Bell Atlantic and Anixter as resellers, and Access Graphics as a distributor. Also, we estimate that Fore has about 60-70% of the U.S. government ATM LAN market. * General Datacomm. We estimate that revenues from indirect channels will increase from 10% of total revenues in 1997 to about 50% of total revenues in 2000. * Newbridge Networks. We expect Carrier Scale Internetworking (CSI) will be deployed in May-June 1998 at PacBell and Bell Atlantic. Wireline Equipment Highlights: * ADC Telecom. Revenues at ADC's Kentrox division are expected to be weak in the January quarter due to three key reasons: a cyclical slowdown in wireless infrastructure spending, Cisco Systems integrating DSU capabilities into its routers, and increased competition. * Telco Systems announced its EdgeLink100 product, a plug-and-play DS3 multiplexer which supports up to 28 T1s. The company also announced the acquisition of Jupiter Technology, for Frame Relay and ATM access capabilities. Recent contracts include British Telecom and Concert Communications. We estimate the aggregate value of these contracts at $5-8 million in fiscal 1998. Comment United States Telecommunications Equipment/Networking 30 January 1998 Joseph J.
