What are they doing??!! SEMI officials said the Asian financial crisis has made it difficult for semiconductor manufacturers in the region to sustain the liquidity necessary to continue planned investments for facilities and new technology. SEMI's working group will investigate ways in which equipment and materials suppliers can address the crisis and help semiconductor-realted industries in Asia. This is an excerpt from article found by Brian. What is happening to Korea is of their own doing. They over expanded without figuring on ROI, and it bit them. This kind of help, in contrast to the IMF help (the latter of which pumps in liquidity in exchange for tangible reforms - sort of like taking partial ownership), scares me to death. If they can't get capital, it is probably for good reason - they can't make money on it (eg DRAM), or they haven't figured out where they want to concentrate their resources. Personally, I am going to e-mail all of the IR departments of the equipment companies that I own to dicourage this. Dear Sirs, Please do not participate in the misguided effort to 'help' the Korean semi manufacturers. I own stock in your company because you make equipment, not because you are a loan company. I realize that in the short term this might hurt your revenues, but in the long run it is almost certainly true that the Korean companies have an agenda that does not have as its primary focus the ROI. If it were their primary focus they would not have overexpanded in every area they entered from DRAM to real estate. If they can convince a conservative banker or equity investors that they will be able to return their investment, great. Otherwise, please do not risk my money. Thank you. Clark
