Michael - re: "Personal computer sales of 2,000 mass retail home electric appliance stores.."

I think the old adage applies: "The Reports of the PC's death in S.E. Asia & Japan have been greatly exaggerated".

Compaq cuts Deskpro
prices
By Erich Luening

Compaq Computer (CPQ) continues to cut
price tags on its PCs.

Today, the Houston-based computer
powerhouse made across-the-board price
cuts of up to 18 percent on all business
desktop computers. The move means there
are now five Deskpro models priced below
$1,000, Compaq said.

Prices for Compaq Deskpro 2000 models
were reduced by as much as 14 percent, with
three models priced below $1,000, which
includes a model with an Intel 200 MHz
Pentium processor with MMX technology.
The company said it now offers its customers
a choice of processors ranging from the Intel
166 MHz Pentium processor with MMX
technology to the Intel 300 MHz Pentium II for
prices ranging from $940 to $2,090.

In addition, Compaq cut prices for the
Deskpro 4000, with its Intel Pentium II at to
333 MHz, by 18 percent. The Deskpro
4000S, featuring a Pentium 166 MHz, is now
priced as low as $920, the company's lowest
priced Deskpro model, according to the
company.

Also included in the price cutting binge was
the company's Net PC offering, the Deskpro
4000N, which now comes in three models,
with prices ranging from $960 to $1,190. And
Compaq cuts prices by 17 percent on the
Deskpro 6000 series, which includes
Pentium II processors and a MatroxMillenium
II graphics card. Prices now range from
$2,040 to $3,220.

Compaq attributed the price reductions to
the increased "efficiencies" of Compaq's
build-to-order manufacturing processes and
reductions in component costs.

In December, the company cut prices for its
Presario model of PC to as low as $699.
