Looks like the field is getting more and more crowded. At the same time major chip companies that have not yet entered the market must be feeling the pressure. Worried about getting left behind they may look to buy their way in.

TOKYO -- Global growth in digital videodisk player sales will average 71% annually through 2002, to 11.53 million units from 796,000 units last year, a trade group predicts.

The Electronic Industries Association of Japan also forecast the U.S. market for DVD players will expand to 3.2 million units in 2002 from 360,000 units last year, and that the Japanese market will grow to 2.2 million units from 140,000.
