I am still confused as to why they used the book. I guess someone bought the rights and couldn't come up with any writers or a director who did anything more than skim the book. It isn't like it was one of Heinlein's best, being one of his juvenile novels. A decent read, but...

And the movie isn't bad. It certainly is a great sendup of the fascist tendencies in this country. Just look at newsreels you linked to. The worship of the military and the acceptance of authoritarian rule. Not to mention how they setup the Bugs to be a scapegoat for the fascist government. Given that it was before Dubya was president and his hunt for small countries to invade, it was very timely.

I enjoyed the book because it spent a fair amount of time exploring the history and philosophy behind the society as it existed. Heinlein was a master of world building and the technologies that underpinned those worlds.
