George, any idea what will be in the GX3? from past products, i figure they will have the S3 Scenic Highway or whatever they call the connector the DVD. They will have Duo View for Win 98 (unlike the GX2 duo view only for NT4.0). 128 bit 2D engine. Geometry setup engine. Mip Mapping, and all that. I figured that they would score 180 3D winmarks last year, but nVidia is scoring 245 with is n3 product. they will ship n4 out later this year. And voodoo 2 is already 3x faster than voodoo 1. The bar has been raised, and the "killer" product will end up competing with the nVidia 128 that is out right now. The compelling reason for designers to waste their time on a new S3 chip must be Cost/performance. I don't understand why GX2 was never designed into a lower cost board. Even at a lower performance...Was it because of the "killer" nVidia chip that was released last spring? I am worried... from DIMD voodoo2 press release 2/2/98 Monster 3D II Delivers Unparalleled 3D Processing Power At the core of Diamond's new accelerator is 3Dfx Interactive's Voodoo2 3D chipset, which features two texel engines supporting multiple textures per pixel and has been highly-touted among the industry's leading game developers and top PC game publications as the 3D graphics engine of choice. The combination of 3Dfx's new chipset with Diamond's 8MB memory architecture allows Monster 3D II to achieve 3D rendering rates of more than 60 frames-per-second (fps) without slowing down overall system performance. In addition, Monster 3D II supports Z-buffering in resolutions up to 800 x 600 with 16-bit color. Monster 3D II includes a dedicated hardware triangle setup engine which enables faster 3D rendering; rapid processing of multiple textures per pixel for added realism and color images; and single-pass trilinear filtering to provide smoother, more defined visuals. Other key functions include edge anti-aliasing, gouraud shading, alpha blending, texture mapping and more. The Monster 3D also features a specialized version of Diamond InControl Tools, enabling users to adjust refresh rates and power levels, depending on the performance requirements of the 3D game or application. Additionally, the Diamond Monster 3D II comes equipped with Diamond-exclusive high-performance drivers.
