"3Com prepares to offer users total control"

"Plans are in the works by 3Com Corp. to
give Total Control access platform users
exactly that: total control over all network
functions.

Over the course of this year, 3Com will add to the Total Control chassis
support for voice over IP, fax over IP, video delivery and PBX features.
The keystone to the strategy is Total Control's DSP (digital-signal
processor) architecture, which allows the new features to be
downloaded onto Total Control cards in any configuration a user needs,
said officials at 3Com, in Santa Clara, Calif.

That flexibility has changed the way one IT manager thinks about
networking.

"The DSP architecture has given us the ability to change very quickly
and try new technologies easily," said Bill Campbell, IT manager at
Internet Direct Inc., an Internet service provider in Toronto. "This moves
us closer to having just one box at the edge, which is where I hope to
go."
