I wish the best to NN shareholders, but I do think the earnings shortfall could well be some confirmation that ASND picked up ATM market share in Q4, as surmised by ASND mgmt.

Don't know how the Street will react, but hidden in the bad news is positive newsfor ASND, if anyone would take the time to do the analysis.

Gary, I agree with you that NN will hurt tomorrow. I suspect it'll be trading in the high teens most of the day and if lucky they'll close at 20. As for your assessment of ASND and others picking up market share at NN expense, I believe the ATM business is the one area NN cited as doing well. I think this means good things for ASND, but I wouldn't be too quick to call this a victory over NN in the ATM business.

Revenue for the Company's ATM products is expected to reach record levels again in the third quarter of fiscal1998. This will be the ninth consecutive record quarter for ATM revenue. Order intake for ATM equipment, driven principally by the MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170 Multiservices Switch, is expected to more than doublethe level achieved in the corresponding quarter last year. The Company's wide area network (WAN) packet business represented more than 50% of total revenue, up from 45% in the previous quarter. This resulted from
growth in MainStreetXpress 36170 system revenue, which partially offset a revenue decline in the Company's more mature packet system, the 36120 MainStreet Packet Transfer Exchange frame relay system.

The NN press release says that ATM is at record levels but TDM and the former UB networks business is not doing well.

I'm not sure if this will be good for Ascend! Look at the whole sector today...when the market was way up? Not a good sign.
