Ike probably was remembering that that's exactly what Hitler thought when he invaded Russia.

The Soviets were certainly a Potemkin village - as a country. They were unproductive and poor. But, they always had enough when it came to their military.

An airborne Division with anti-tank support sounds nice, but they had at the time several times as many tanks as the rest of the planet combined. By the end of the war, they build 60,000 of those fighters, below. It would be a full scale war with an outcome far from certain.
