I wish I could recommend your post more.

Freedom lies in being able to do what you want to do, with no one telling you what to do. That takes money. And the best way to acquire money, and thus freedom, is to start early and let compound interest do the work.

The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function - Albert Bartlett.

HI Greenspirit! Not only don't the schools teach anything about finance, we found out some years ago, they don't teach 8th or 9th graders, nor in HS, about BASIC finance for themselves.

Most of us of a certain age, learned in the 9th grade in General Business, how to accumulate money for ourselves, by saving part of our earnings, the magic of check books and how to KNOW where you are with that tool, what simple and compound interest is, and why it is important to know about,

--and WHY one doesn't look at a credit card and think...WOW, I can spend that much (the limit of the card)...

We really didn't know that our oldest back in the late 70s and early 80's, that just because the credit card has a ceiling, doesn't mean you get to spend that much, and not have to pay the bill yourself....And she's pretty smart! Boy, did she learn after the first fiasco...and so did we....WE taught her and the other 3 kids the basics of what they needed to know and didn't get in HS...AND that was one of the best HS's in the State!

Husband was an Aero Engineer from RPI out of Troy, NY....Smart guy...he was just incensed about the situation and went to the Principal where the kids went to HS m(they never knew), and later to the Superintendent of Schools in the State about the whole problem.

BUT, Neither of us could ever figure out the "New Math" they tried to teach all the kids...
