3Com President Member of Group Planning Satellite Broadcast Network in Israel

By Efi Landau

Eric Benhamou, president of 3Com, which is
one of the largest data communications
companies, is a partner in a group planning
to establish a satellite broadcasting network
(DBS) in Israel, based on Ministry of
Communications plans to open the field to
competition.

The group plans to invest $150-400 million
and is negotiating with other potential
investors.

Israeli firm Unicorp, owned by Prosper
Abutbil, who founded the group and resides
in both France and Israel, holds the rights to
the technology and methods of French
company Canal Plus's satellite broadcast
network, and is negotiating with various
groups to sell the rights to use the
technology.

In the next two days, Unicorp will hold
meetings in Tel Aviv with professional
concerns in the cable television industry
including representatives of the cable TV
franchisees, Ministry of Communications
representatives, the public broadcasting
administration, and various investors.

Benhamou has run 3Com since 1990, and
the company is currently considered one of
the three largest data communications
companies in the world, along with Cisco
and Bay Networks. The company has a
development center in Israel as well as a
distribution and marketing center. In 1994,
3Com acquired Nicecom from Nice Systems
for $58.5 million. In acquiring multinational
modem manufacturer US Robotics, 3Com
also acquired US Robotics Israeli subsidiary
Scorpio which US Robotics had previously
acquired for $80 million.
