I don't know..I think shares that are short only.
but remember the market makers create options sometimes which means that a short sale may have been part of what the market maker did
when he executed a option request.
In fact what goes on to complete an option transaction is a mystery.
On many occassions I've sold an option to close out a position.
My broker told me I was the only trader on that option that day...
and I may have sold 100 contracts but the volume showed up as 200 contracts.So, someone was in the middle.
