I forgot to mention a couple of differences between AMDs quest and Japan Inc. Japan Inc. had the support of the Japanese government while MAD doesn't have the US government batting for it yet. That's a big difference.
On the other hand, Toyota, Honda, Datsun were once midgets vs the mighty Detroit Iron. But the market changed after the oil crisis in 1973-4. Japan was ready with fuel effiecient cars while Detroit had nothing but gas guzzlers with smog pumps. Intel would do well to learn from that example and I think they are nimble enough to do it.
Furthermore, I doubt AMD has the manufacturing efficiency that Japan Inc once had but they keep trying. Maybe they need a need CEO? <G>
