My son says.

If you have another Mac to start the system files with to gain access to the laptop's hard drive and you believe that disk sectors are bad on the laptop you can run Speed Disk from the Mac being started up to the laptop to defragment it.

If you have no idea how to start up the laptop from another thru a scuzzy cable or don't have another Mac then go to a repair shop.

Michael, maybe it's something simple, like a 'stuck' shift key?
When you bring up the Ext Mgr control panel, can you select (or create) a different set? What OS rev are you running? What happens when you boot keeping the spacebar held down?
