I am using Netcom and IBM for my internet service. IBM has 56k service and is digital.
Bell Atlantic lines are all analog for the time being and they are not going to change any
time soon. My other question is if most areas in the country are like this what the use of
56k stuff.

Moenar,

Most parts of the country have analogue phone lines to the ISP. However, the x2 modem should work at around 47K depending upon the line noise in your analogue line to the ISP. I suspect the ISP is digital from their RAC. I also suspect the line Bell Atlantic is providing you is noisy. You should ask them for a "clean" analogue line. That is all you need and that is all anyone needs to use a 56K modem. That is why the 56K modem sells so well.

I am presently using a cable modem but do have an x2. I obtained an average of 44-46K using that modem over an analogue line to the ISP. The prior 28.8K modem I was using was only getting 24K thoughput so my speed was close to double.
